Welcome to another edition of the VST Newsletter, where we share products and practices that help people experience life more deeply. Today, we will be sharing information on quantum physics and the infinite potential that exists in our world. Have fun and enjoy the ride! ✨
“Quantum physics underlies everything — how atoms work, how chemistry works, and why our biology does the things it does.” — Richard Webb, executive director of New Scientist
What Exactly Is “Quantum?”
As you know, many of VST’s products contain quantum technology… but what exactly does that mean?
🔎 Quantum physicists study the behavior of the world at the subatomic level,
🌍 Whereas classic physicists look at big things like objects, motion, and gravity…
🔬 Quantum physicists look at the small things like molecules, atoms, and nuclei,
💫 And they’ve discovered that the world does some miraculous things at the microscopic level…
Particles Can Shapeshift
⚖️ Everything in the universe is either a particle or a wave.
📍 Particles are in a specific spot — like planets, tennis balls, and grains of sand.
🌊 Waves are in many places at once — like a speaker that plays sound for everyone in the room.
🎩 Physicists have found that particles — standing objects — can also behave as waves.
🪄 So imagine you, as a person, being in multiple places at once (like the sound of a speaker).
✨ This is known as “Wave-Particle Duality” and is one of the cornerstones of quantum physics.
Particles Play Peekaboo
♾️ Particles are shapeshifting at all times — turning into waves and then back into particles.
🔬 It’s only when we run an experiment that we know exactly where the particle is.
✋ Making an observation is said to “collapse” or “decohere” the wave, forcing the object into just one of its many possible states.
🤫 For example, an electron will be doing cool things and acting like a wave… but then when we try to watch… it will turn into a single particle.
It’s kind of like the movie Toy Story: the particles come to life and do amazing things… but then as soon as a human comes… they stand still and appear to behave as normal particles.
Particles Can Time Travel
👬 Picture 2 particles — twin particles — that started out in the same object.
☎️ They get split up and are now on other sides of the world — but they still keep in touch.
🪢 This is known as “entanglement” and is at the heart of quantum physics.
💫When two particles become entangled, they remain connected even when separated by vast distances.
“Entangled particles can transmit important information, they can play a lot of quantum games, they can do things beyond what we can do in the classical world.” — Xie Chen, Physics Professor
Summary: There is More Potential than Meets The Eye
When asked to explain quantum physics to a 5-year-old, here’s what Neil DeGrasse Tyson said:
👁️ ”Nobody intuitively understands quantum physics, because our intuition was formed while looking at the big world of rocks and lions and mountains.
🧠 We did not evolve while looking through microscopes at atoms and molecules, so our brains cannot comprehend what happens at these levels.
✨ So we just have to embrace that the most successful theory of the universe… it defies common sense.” — Neil Degrasse Tyson (link)
🌍 In other words… quantum physics makes no sense
👁️ When we look at the world through our conventional understanding, we see particles that are stuck in one form, stuck in one place, and stuck in one point in time.”
💫 But when we understand quantum… we see particles that can shapeshift, teleport and time travel.
♾️ There is so much more potential when we look at things at the quantum level.
